Nambak to have no poor by 2009

(KPL) Nambak, one of 11 districts of Luang Prabang, has claimed it will accomplish in poverty reduction of its 10,313 families next year.
“Only 600 families live under poverty right now, which equal to 6 per cent of the total population in the district,” said last week the governor of the district Mr. Bounlat Lattanaphoubay.
To achieve the plan the district has tapped all its existing potentials in line with the policies of the party and government.
Last year Nambak enjoyed an 8% increased gross-domestic-product (GDP) growth. The GDP was valued at 301 billion kip or 4.8 million kip a capita.
In recent years, residents of the district have turned their attention from natural-relied production to technology-relied production to ensure that their production meets market demand. This contributes to reducing slash and burn cultivation practises in the district. At present only 1,500 ha are done with slash and burn cultivation.
The farmers of the province now plant rice on 2,600 ha in a production capacity of 4.5 tonnes a hectare. Some 369 ha of district’s paddy field is also planted with rice during dry season, which can produce 5 tonnes a hectare on average from the water supply of 238 irrigation systems.
Sixty-seven kilometres of roads have been constructed with a 2 billion investment by people in 16 villages during the last few years.
