Foreign Deputy Minister calls on reducing development gap
(KPL) Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Bounkeuth Sangsomsack has called on reducing development gap and unbalanced benefits of economic growth in the region. “At the same time, the Asia-Pacific has also faced some new challenges, particularly in expansive oil price and foodstuff price,” he said. “While a huge demand of energy use has increased rapidly so the security of energy and environment protection should be implemented actively, as a main key for sustainable socio-economic development and achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. He also called on all countries in the region to boost cooperation through regional and sub-regional mechanism, and to have national appropriated policy of each country so as to cope with other challenges. “Lao Government has pledged to actively participate in cooperative mechanism and in the region and sub-region along with create a strategy for energy development till 2020, by concentrating on the development of energy sector which is national potential resource so as to contribute to national development and supplying energy to neighbouring countries,” he said. Mr Bounkeuth, representing the Lao Government, gave comments at the 64th Session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) held between 24 and 30 April in Bangkok. The session was attended by representatives from 53 countries and International Organisations and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).
