Swiss grants US$2 million for sanitation project in two provinces

 (KPL) Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation has agreed to grant US$2 million or 16 billion kip through Save the Children’s Water, Sanitation and Health Project (WASH) for implementing the sanitation project in two provinces.

The project is aimed to reduce the mortality rate for local people causing by water-borne disease stemming from dirt water consumption. It also improves the livelihood of poor people in upland areas where have not been accessed to the clean water, sanitation and primary health
service.

Representative of Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, Mrs. Ruth Huber said that this project will be undertaken at the beginning of this year by focusing on responding the clean water to 30,000 people in Luang Prabang and Sayabouly provinces.

The project will build wells and artesian wells for 6,000 families in 60 villages, and 60 schools in two provinces, coupling with sanitation campaign.

The hygienic education, relating to the use of clean water to reduce mortality rate, will also be thought in school.

The signing ceremony for grant aid was held at the WASH office, on 10 January, between the representative of Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, Mrs. Ruth Huber and the representative of WASH, Mr. Shumon Sengupta in the witnesses of officials concerned.
