The Save the Children Norway is a non-governmental humanitarian organisation, which is working to realise children’s rights in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
The SCNiL have been working in Laos since the early 1980s in partnership with the government of Laos in supporting basic education, creating awareness on child rights and finding ways to protect children from exploitation, violence and abuse, said Mr. Jhon Reinstein.
He said that, since 1997 Save the Children Norway and the Lao Youth Union, especially the Department of Media have collaborated together to provide opportunities for children and young people to access quality information and raise awareness on child rights and other social problems concerning children and youths.
At the beginning of 2010, a joint workshop on the radio programme was held to assess the achievement and constraints of the three-year programme (2007-2010). The final assessment showed that the radio programme has had an overall position impact on children and youth, Mr. Jhon Reinstein said.
He also said, 43 children and youths presenters/DJs have been enhanced on child rights, child participation, child protection issue, and radio skills related, they have involved in radio production. 22,730 listeners directly benefit from the programme.
It was therefore agreed to continue the collaboration regarding the media programmes for the next three years, from 2010-2012. The overall objective of the project is to raise awareness of children rights, child participation, protection of children from any forms of child violation through radio and television programmes for children and youths.
Over the coming three year-programming period, it is expected that at least 30,000 children and youths will directly receive information on rights, life skill and social issue.
