Indian Republic Day marked in Vientiane
(KPL) Indian Ambassador to Laos Mr Suresh Kumar Goel and his wife together with Indian residents in Laos organized a reception to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Republic Day of India last Friday at Don Chan Palace Hotel in Vientiane. Ambassador Goel said in the event that both India and Laos have successfully overcome the turbulence of the global financial crisis by maintaining respectable economic growth rates and a positive environment for foreign investors. “Informed estimates suggest that Laos has maintained the distinction of being perhaps the fastest growing LDC (least developed countries) and it may indeed be able to graduate out of the LDC status even before the target year of 2020,” said Mr. Goel. He said that the growth rate of approximately 7.5% in India and revival of the stock markets on the back of infusion of foreign equity clearly demonstrates the strength of the Indian economy. “India has continued to be a trustworthy partner in the economic growth of Laos,” said Mr. Goel. “Archaeological Survey of India experts have begun work on restoration of Wat Phou temple. Work on hydro power projects and irrigation projects with funds from the Lines of Credit from India have already begun.” We are also prepared to consider further cooperation between our two countries in the area of institution building, capacity building, infrastructure development and most importantly development of Lao young professionals to contribute to their national endeavours. Our historical and civilisation links which encompass Buddhism, Hinduism and many customs and traditions provide a strong foundation for our joint endeavours. In a few weeks time, we hope to hold the next session of Lao-India Joint Commission in New Delhi and that occasion will provide another important platform to review our bilateral relations and identify newer areas of cooperation. Also present at the event were Dr. Thonglon Sisoulith, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ministers from line ministries and foreign diplomatic officials.
