Sayaboury is out to eradicate poverty by 2012
(KPL) Sayaboury province has a plan on poverty reduction. It would totally eradicate the slash and burn cultivation method and instead give land to the people for sedentary cultivation.
Some of people would be resettled in development villages. In their new locations they would be able to continue to be agriculturists and to raise domestic animals
Irrigation projects had been planned to provide water for the growth of crops and the emphasis would be for the resettled people to produce and sell their products to the market.
Mr Lien Thikeo, governor of this province said that up to date three meetings had been held regarding this poverty reduction plan.
Sayaboury had already reduced the number of people who lived below the poverty level. In 2001 there were 5,000 poor families or 7.4 per cent of the province’s total number of families but in 2010 the number decreased to 3,380 families and this was a reduction of 2.4 per cent.
