State President Nguyen Minh Triet and a high-level delegation of Vietnam left Laos on Aug. 26 afternoon on a state visit to Cambodia at the invitation of King Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni.

On the same day morning, President Triet arrived in Champassak province and called on Khamtay Siphandone, former Lao State and Party President, who described the Laos visit by the Vietnamese President as a good moral support for Lao people while they are working hard in anticipation of Party congresses at different levels and especially the ninth Party Congress.

Khamtay Siphandone expressed his belief that the Lao-Vietnamese special ties would be enhanced through visits of leaders, and officials of ministries, authorities and localities of the two countries.

President Triet expressed his pleasure at the development of Laos, especially the economic growth rate at eight percent despite impacts of the global financial crisis and economic downturn.

He admired Laos’s achievements, partly from Khamtay Siphandone’s contributions and added that Vietnam wished to further boost cooperation with Laos on the way of development towards socialism.

On the same day, President Triet visited the Vietnamese consulate in Pakse, Champassak province, and representatives of Vietnamese residents in southern Laos.

President Triet stressed that Champassak was an economic hub of Laos maintaining close relation with many localities of Vietnam. Travel between Vietnam and Champassak is favourable thanks to land routes through Cambodia and a direct air route to Ho Chi Minh City from Pakse to come into service soon. In addition, Vietnam’s investment in Laos has increased sharply in recent years.

President Triet asked the consulate to render support to Vietnamese enterprises operating in Laos. To Vietnamese residents in Laos, President Triet praised them for their unity within their community and trust won from local people and authorities
