Cashew nut planting project against poverty launched in Champassak

(KPL) A cashew nut planting project for market oriented-production has recently been launched Khong island district, Champassak province.

The cashew nut will be grown on 560 ha in Hardsaikhoun village, which is a joint project of Champassak Agriculture and Forestry Service, sustainable agriculture and forestry market oriented-production extension project and local authority. Mr Khamlack Bounyavong, a member of Champassak Agriculture and Forestry Service said that this year Champassak province will pay an effort to grow cashew nut for market sale on 560 ha because a survey has found that two areas of Nasuea (250 ha) and Hardsaikhouan (310 ha) in Khong island district are suitable for growing cashew nut.

“The project has completed in land clearance on more than 500 ha and the rest is expected to be over by the end of this month,” Mr Khamlack continued.

He added that four producing groups with a total number of 87 families taking part in the project have been set up in the first area of Hardsaikhoun village.

These villagers are stakeholders in the plantation and maintenance of cashew nut tree.

The project has allocated land for planting cashew nut to each involving families and they have been trained on technique of cashew nut planting and maintaining.

This project hopes alleviating poverty among local people.
