SAVANNAKHET PROVINCE
Savannakhet is the second largest town on the Mekong river bank where shares the borders with Vietnam and Thailand. It is also an important center for the flourishing trade between Thailand and Vietnam.
The provincial capital, Savan, lies just across the Mekong River from the Border City of Mukdahan, Thailand. It is a bustling commercial center due to the daily trade activity between Thailand and Vietnam.
That Inh Hang
That Ing Hang is located 15 kilometers along the Seno road in the north of Savannakhet. It is the most impressive stupa and sacred religious place for Savannakhe people. The relic that you will find their dates back several centuries and attracts a number of tourists and Buddisht pilgrims each year, particularly during the full moon in February, when a religions ceremony is celebrated in its honors. That Ing Hang stupa, built in the mid-16th century during the reign of King Sikhottabong. The towering stupa, at the base of which is a hollow chamber with an impressive collection of Buddha images, is the site of a large festival held every February or March.
Heuan Hin
Heuan hin (stone house) is located in Ban Dong Dokmay, Song khone District about 10 kilometers south of Savannakhet. The building was constructed between 553 AD and 700 AD. Today little more than unrestored ruins remain.
That Phon
That Phon was built in 236 BE by Sondeth Phaphouthavongsa in order of
Phaya Sithammasokrath and it is one of a sacred stupa in Savannakhet.
Savannakhet people will celebrate it on full moon of February every year.
Dinosaurs
Savannakhet is a place where a number of dinosaurs and Stone Age equipment is discovered. There are bones of posterior feet, heads, patella and 30 tailbones. Bones have also been excavated in new sites near Bane Tangvai.

Today, remnants of downed US helicopters, fighter planes and other war material can be seen in Savannakhet near the border with Vietnam. A Lao-Vietnam War Memorial was built in 1990 in memory of the Lao and Vietnamese soldiers who fought for the liberation of Laos. And situated in Phin District near by the road No 9.
Festival and Events
- March, Heuabe Hine festival, cerebrate at the time of the full moon of March.
- April 13—15, Boun Pi Mai Lao (Lao New Year) the country takes just 3 days holiday. During the holiday people go out to street and throw water at each other, worship at the temples and end up as eating, dancing and singing.
- December, That Ing Hang festival will be at the time of full moon of December. People from Vientiane or people from another provinces around will come to join it during the three day or more holidays.
Getting there and Away
by air
Lao Aviation provides daily flights between Vientiane and Savannakhet. The trip takes about 50 minutes.
By Land
The distance between Vientiane to Savannakhe is 485 km. Getting there by bus takes seven hours. The fare costs 25,000 kip per passenger.
By river
Cruising from Vientian to Savannakhe is possible from September to November. Passengers travelling by boat have to stay at least a night before getting there.
